Why Tulsa Muslims Need a Transitional Housing Facility
There is an estimated population of 6,000 – 8,000 Muslims in Tulsa and 35,000 Muslims statewide, therefore, the Foundation continues to house homeless and needy Muslims daily. It’s a fact, that Oklahoma does not have enough shelters to serve the state’s homeless needs. A growing Muslim population means a growing population of those in need.
The Surayya Anne Foundation’s primary goal is to re-establish our client’s independence and self-reliance by focusing on work and education as part of their stay in our program. To this end, in 2008 we developed a transitional living program for women and children in need and in March 2009 we opened our first apartment as part of this goal.
According to a national report released in 2013, by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the homeless population rose by 11% in Tulsa with 1,008 homeless people. At the Foundation, we receive over 95 calls on average each month and unfortunately we can only serve less than 1% of those requests due to limited housing.
Over the years, we have experienced a steady increase in our client base, services offered, and onsite staffing, thereby establishing a strong precedence for expansion to build our own facility. We have also experienced an increase in financial support from the Oklahoma Muslim community.
Surayya Anne Foundation Housing Project
As part of giving back to the community, we purchased land in 2014 to build Oklahoma’s first Muslim-American women run, transitional housing facility. With your investment, the entire complex will soon become a permanent facility for the homeless and and low income women, children and families, housing up to 26 individuals.
Home Creations, Oklahoma’s largest home builder, has generously offered to invest in our vision by managing the building project at a cost of $561,000.
In February 2017, the city of Tulsa approved the plans and issued a building permit. Currently the parking lot and building 1 are paid in full thanks to $245,000 in community donations. Funding opportunities are available for the remaining 4 buildings. There are 2 double unit buildings available at an estimated cost of $99,000 per building, and 2 single unit buildings available at a cost of $62,000 per building. A further $316,000 is needed to complete the project
In addition to the shelter apartments, we have included the plans for an office. This office will allow us to provide an array of services to our clients including:
- Onsite Consultation, Case Management and Counseling
- Access to Services and Benefits Like Public Housing and Food Stamps
- Support Group meetings
- Educational classes, as well as Personal Development Like “Budgeting 101”
- A Food and Clothing Distribution Room
- Onsite Laundry Room set up for 3 Washers and Dryers
Leaving a Legacy Worth An Atom’s Weight In Good
By serving the homeless and working poor in our society, the Surayya Anne Foundation fulfills a much needed requirement of our faith. Based on love, peace, mercy, and service to humanity, we are leaving a legacy of altruism by giving back to our communities.
God Almighty says in the Qur’an, “[… So] whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it (will be rewarded for it accordingly).” 99:7.
With this wonderful opportunity for a sadaqa jariyah (ongoing charity/continuous rewards), we welcome your generous support in fulfilling our vision in building this transitional housing facility by donating towards our building fund.
Your financial gifts will enable us to make a positive difference in the lives of our Tulsa families, both, for the near future and for future generations for years to come inshallah.
“…and lend Allah a goodly loan, it shall be increased manifold (to their credit), and theirs shall be an honorable good reward (i.e. Paradise).” 57:18
